Vietnam ( Vietnamese : Việt Nam Chữ Nôm : 越南[viət˨ næm˧] ( see ) ), officially named the Socialist Republic of Vietnam ( Cộng Hòa Xộ Hội Chủ Nghĩa Việt Nam 共和 社會主義 越南 ) is the easternmost state on the Indochina Peninsula in Asia Southeast . Vietnam borders the People's Republic of China to the north, Laos to the northwest, Cambodia to the southwest and east of the South China Sea.

With a population of around 84 million people, Vietnam is the 13th most populous country in the world. Vietnam is included in the economic group " Next Eleven "; according to the government , Vietnam's GDP grew by 8.17% in 2006, the second fastest growing country in East Asia and first in Southeast Asia. At the end of 2007, the finance minister said Vietnam's GDP growth is expected to hit a record high in the last ten years of 8.44%.

Vietnamese history can be recalled to 2500 years ago, but according to legend, it can be recalled to 4000 years ago. Vietnam, from the 11th century BC to the 10th century AD the majority was under the rule of the Chinese empire . In 939 AD, Vietnam became politically independent, and began to use Champa as its name. The aftermath is considered a period of development of Vietnam's national identity.
